Social Media Review Post 1

With the growth of social media and the virtual online space comes a decrease in the privacy people have. This lack of privacy is the cost of using social media that in the end benefits only one group and that is advertisers using the space. Advertisers using the social media space can instantly reach thousands of people and use special algorithms to target people with the exact ad they need to see to want to buy something.

For my first analysis, I scrolled through Facebook until I found an ad that stuck out as unusual to me. The contents and specificity of the ad seemed too specific to be a random occurrence. I feel that based off of a recent search I have made on Youtube that this ad as pictured was selected for me to see.

I feel that this image is a perfect example of a company listening rather than shouting and begging for attention. While I could care less about Raw or WWE on its own they made the play of bringing in Johnny Knoxville. This captures my interest as I am excited for the upcoming movie he is about to star in. Raw listened to what else is popular on social media at the moment and took that into account when choosing their special guest star.

Next, I selected Gamestop as an example of a targeted audience as I do not have them followed. Taking into account that my Instagram has followed several Pokemon accounts this is a prime example of a post I would be interested in seeing. Even without the Pokemon pages directly followed I would still see Gamestops posts due to my gaming-related posts and followings.

For my last example, I have chosen an ad on Tik Tok I saw that I felt really took into account the demographics of who they are advertising to. Emporia State is a very popular college for people in my area of growing up to go. In addition, I am a current college student and at the right age to fit right in at Emporia. Overall they did a great job choosing Tik Tok as the majority of users are high school to college-aged.

In conclusion, all three social media did an excellent job in targeting me and my demographic by displaying posts that hit several different of my interests. Their ability to take into account all of my data from different platforms gives them the ability to show me exactly what I want to see and try to lure me into falling for their advertisements.
